How to read spray nozzle markings?

The spray nozzle is a key element of any paint sprayer – it determines the width of the spray and the amount of paint delivered to the surface. Understanding the markings on the nozzles allows you to select the right model for a specific task and achieve the best results.

What do the numbers on the nozzle mean?

Most spray nozzles feature three numbers. Each number conveys important information:

First digit – spray width

Multiply this number by 5to find out the approximate spray width from a distance of approximately 30 cm from the surface to be painted.
Example:
Nozzle marked as 529 – 5 × 5 = 25 cm stream width.

The last two digits are the nozzle orifice size.

This is the diameter of the hole in thousandths of an inch (1/1000 of an inch). The higher the number, the more paint flows through the nozzle.
Example:
Nozzle 529 - the hole has 0.029 inch, which means it works great for dense materials such as putties, plasters and other heavy mixtures.

Why does nozzle size matter?

Selecting the appropriate nozzle affects:

  • Work efficiency – a nozzle that is too small will restrict paint flow and extend painting time.
  • Quality of finish – a nozzle that is too large may cause streaks and excessive material consumption.

What do the letters on the nozzle mean?
