When to Replace a Paint Sprayer Nozzle? Signs of Wear and Practical Tips

The paint nozzle is a small but crucial component of the entire painting system. It's responsible for precise paint atomization and the appropriate spray width. Unfortunately, like any consumable part, it wears out. Over time, its performance becomes less effective, affecting both the quality of the finish and material consumption.

How to recognize a worn nozzle?

Unfortunately, a worn nozzle doesn't always look like the one in the photo below. Often, wear isn't immediately apparent. However, there are signs that indicate it's time for replacement.

Here are the most common symptoms that may indicate that the nozzle is worn:

1. Smaller working width

Each new nozzle has a specific paint spray width (from the gun positioned 30cm from the surface). For example, a 517 nozzle should cover 25cm. As the nozzle wears, this width will decrease. A severely worn nozzle can cover up to 50% less area.

2. Changed spray pattern

A new nozzle delivers a clean, even, fan-shaped stream of paint. If you start to notice the stream becoming rounded, scattered, or uneven, it's a sign that the nozzle orifice is worn. Edges are no longer defined, and the final result is losing quality.

3. Increased paint consumption

A worn nozzle not only reduces spray precision but also causes increased material consumption. The opening becomes wider, meaning more paint flows over the same surface area. The result? You'll reach for a new material container more often.

4. Lack of consistency in coverage

Even though your settings and technique remain the same, do you notice that the paint isn't covering the entire surface evenly? Are there streaks, patches, or areas that need retouching? This is another sign that the tip isn't working as it should.

Factors affecting nozzle wear:

  • Size – smaller nozzles wear out faster.
  • Working pressure – the higher the pressure, the faster the wear.
  • Paint type – paints with a high solids content (e.g. epoxy, fire-resistant) wear the tips more.
  • Cleaning frequency – clogging and inadequate cleaning also affect service life.

What are the benefits of regularly replacing the nozzle?

  • Better coverage on the first try
  • Lower material consumption
  • Saving time and money
  • Professional, even end result

How to choose a new nozzle?

Pay attention to two parameters:

  • Fan width (the first digit in the marking times 5 – e.g. 5 in 517 = approx. 25 cm at a distance of 30 cm from the wall),
  • Hole size (the last two numbers – the larger the number, the more paint is permeable).

Example: 517 – width approx. 25 cm, hole 0.017 inch.
